Multidextrous misfit Philipp Hülsenbeck is a musician, producer, DJ and co-founder of the Unguarded label, releases music under the Uxile moniker and creates live sets mixing off-kilter post-club and electro-acoustic sensitivities.
Philipp loves to bring to the fore unusual minds thinking outside of techno’s 4/4 box. His own works reflect this ethos, fusing twisted vocal samples with askew percussive and electro-acoustic elements. In the last decade, he has had solo releases on TraTraTrax, Altin Village & Mine, Präsens Editionen, as well as his Unguarded imprint, which is fast becoming one of the most relevant outfits in Berlin. With a globally-minded appreciation of sound, Unguarded represents an exciting community of artists invested in showcasing a broad array of sonics and a relatively unpretentious approach to the brief of performance artists. His recent Uxile debut album Vapors Unfold is the strongest showing of his misfit ethos yet, with glistening genres flowing beautifully between each other. Presaging extended realizations in live and club contexts, the album is also his most electronic release to date—an exciting addition to an eclectic body of work. Prior endeavors have extended to collaborations with the concert organist Michael Schönheit, culminating in a commissioned piece presented at the Leipzig concert hall, Gewandhaus. Other ventures include a feature on the ’no pare, sigue sigue II‘ compilation set forth by Colombia’s pioneering label TraTraTrax, quoted by The Quietus as the global crème de la crème of sound design-oriented club music producers.
As a curator, label manager, and producer, Philipp has been a pivotal figure in endorsing artists from the experimental electronic music scene. With Unguarded, he curates releases, concerts, performances, and club nights for esteemed platforms such as Berliner Festspiele, Trauma Bar und Kino, and OHM, consistently bringing together some of the finest in Berlin and beyond, such as Unguarded label co-founder Sin Maldita (Hyperdub), Petra Hermanova (Unguarded), bela (Éditions Appærent), M.E.S.H. (PAN), Dis Fig (PTP/Hyperdub), Eliza Douglas (PAN), among many more.
In recent years, he contributed to the experimental electronic music scene in the position of Head Of Sound at Creative Development and Residency program Amplify Berlin, where he ran the studio, assisting artists such as Caterina Barbieri, Laurel Halo, Lucrecia Dalt, Ziúr, Blck Crckr, Khyam Allami, Pan Daijing, Yair Elazar Glotman, Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten), Colin Self, and their respective mentees during their residencies. He became friends and a close collaborator with many of the participating artists. His relationship with Ellison Glenn aka Blck Crckr brought him to work on a commissioned work for the Schauspiel Haus Zürich and saw him in the role of production manager for a string of shows at Peaches 20 years of TEACHES OF PEACHES tour.
